S. S. Kotelianski met Lawrence in 1914. 'Kot' (as he was known) translated many Russian writers, sometimes in collaboration with Lawrence, and was one of Lawrence's inner circle of friends who were to be residents of 'Rananim', the Utopian community which Lawrence hoped to establish after the First World War.
