'Traité des Problemes Geometriques qui sont les plus necessaires pour l'intelligence de la Fortification Regulliere [sic] et Irreguliere', manuscript in French on paper, [France, early 18th century], 64 geometric and fortification diagrams, one folding engraved plate with manuscript drawings, and 'Tables des proportions' for drawing profiles, with accompanying drawings, 158 pages, 4to (232 x 178mm), paginated, blanks, in two parts, (occasional very slight unobtrusive spots), contemporary calf, spine gilt, with later red morocco lettering piece (some light wear and split to upper joint). Provenance: The Right Honble. Montagu Earl of Abingdon, Baron Norreys of Rycott (armorial bookplate) -- Mark Dineley (amorial bookplate); [with] a manuscript on fortifications in Italian, with many diagrams, some in ink and wash, 81 pages, 4to, contemporary calf gilt.
An early 18th-century treatise on mathematics and fortifications, with finely drawn diagrams; possibly written in preparation for publication, the manuscript is reminiscent of works on the applications of mathematics by figures such as Jacques Oznam (1640-1717), whose Traité de la fortification régulière et irrégulère appeared in 1691.
