LATE 19TH CENTURY, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS AND CANCELLATION MARKS, GILT AR AND NUMERALS, PRESSNUMMERN
Painted with merchants in harbour scenes and Oriental figures at various pursuits, within quatrefoil gilt cartouches issuing gilt, puce and iron-red scrolls flanked by plinths supporting Oriental figures, within iron-red borders decorated with C-scrolls enclosing pearls, issuing gilt pendants alternating with blue diamonds, comprising: a figural elephant comport, pair of baskets, and sweetmeat dish, a circular comport, a model of an elephant, a rhinoceros small comport, a bowl, cover and fixed stand on dragon supports, two cushion-shaped dishes and sixteen plates
Provenance
By repute - purchased by Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, KG, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC, in 1860 whilst in India. He was appointed Under-Secretary of State for India in 1880.
