On small circular foot with baluster stem and baluster-shaped body with bifurcated handle with grotesque masks, the front of the body applied with the figure of a satyr with the head of an ass, the hinged cover applied with triton and the figure of Jonah being spewed forth from the blue enamelled whale, the foot and body applied with foliate scrolls and masks and applied between with rock crystal cabochons, the body with curved rectangular panels of rock crystal cut with foliate scrolls, marked inside cover

Lot Essay

The design for this ewer is taken from the work of the German 16th century goldsmith and draughtsman Matthias Zündt (d. 1572), who had served inthe workshop of Wenzel Jamnitzer (d.1585). In his Kraterographie, published in Nuremberg in 1551 he shows a ewer almost identical to the present lot and with an overall design and ornament elements found on the following lot. The drawing is illustrated in J. Hayward, Virtuoso Goldmsiths, and the Triumph of Mannerism, London, 1976, pl. 134.
