AN AUSTRIAN SILVER-GILT MOUNTED ROCK CRYSTAL CUP AND COVER
MARK OF HERMANN RATZERSDORFER, VIENNA, CIRCA 1870
In the form of an ostrich, on domed circular base with broad border applied with winged grotesque masks enamelled in green, white, black and red and inset between with rock crystal cabochons, the domed rock crystal centre applied with foliage supporting the legs of the ostrich, finely modelled in silver, the ovoid body further applied with rock crystal tail with silver-gilt mounts and rock crystal neck and head with silver-gilt mounts and chains, the mounts finely enamelled in red, green, white and black and applied with enamel rosettes, rock crystal cabochons and foiled emeralds and rubies, the detachable domed rock crystal cover applied with two rock crystal wings and a seated figure of a blackamoor in oxidized silver wearing a skirt formed from silver-gilt ostrich feathers with enamelled red, green and white belt, holding a pendant pearl and clasping a frond of green foliage, marked on base and inside cover.
