A GEORGE III SILVER TANKARD
LONDON, 1785, MAKER'S MARK I.R
Tapering cylindrical, the sides with two reeded bands, the hinged flat cover with reeded band and scroll thumbpiece, with angular leaf-capped handle, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms, the cover with crest, marked near handle and inside cover

The arms are those of Leader as borne by the Leader family of Much Soughton, co. Hunts and unofficially by the Irish branch of the family until a confirmation of arms and crest in 1868. The initials WL engraved on the handle of the tankard suggest it may have belonged to William Leader, of Mount Leader, co. Cork (1743-1828) or one of his sons, Rev. Warham Leader (d.1818) or his brother William Leader (1784-1810), the curate of St. Peter's Church, Cork. Additionally the arms could be for William Leader (1784-1858) of Over Town, near Kirby Lonsdale, son of the Sheffield silversmith Thomas Leader.
