DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI

'Romanée-Conti', as the local proverb goes, 'is the central pearl of the Burgundian necklace'. This miniscule vineyard gives its name to the most famous Domaine in the world, commonly referred to as 'D.R.C.', or more reverentially, as 'The Domaine'
This pearl, this small jewel, just under 5 acres, was coveted by a famous collector of jewelry, Madame de Pompadour, but she was outbid by the Prince de Conti, hence the name. The king's minister won against the king's mistress! In 1868 the vineyard passed to the de Villaine family and is still, today, managed by Aubert de Villaine

It never fails to astonish me that the strips of vines which stretch only a modest number of meters up the very gentle slopes from the outskirts of an equally modest, indeed remakably rural rambling of a village Vosne, are capable of producing wines of such world class quality.

Richebourg Grand Cru--Vintage 1952
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Bin-soiled, damaged and faded label. Level 4 cms below the cork
Vintage note: One of my favourite vintages of the decade; firm well structured dependable wines worth looking out for. Many notes, particularly in my Harvey's of Bristol days, but now they are half a century old. It would have been a great vintage had it not been for a cool September following a June drought mitigated by some rain in an otherwise very hot July and August. Fairly late harvest - 7 October.

Tasting note: First tasted in 1967: austerely rich. Next in 1979, still deeply coloured; well developed nose; a deep, velvety wine with rounded flesh over firm bones. Most recently, a magnum produced by Aubert de Villaine, after the St-Vivant vertical. Autumnal colour and bouquet, the latter low-keyed at first but opening up dizzily with many facets; on the palate sweet, firm, excellent flavour, balance, length and finish. Showing its age yet full of life. At the Domaine, Oct 2001 *****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
