Musigny, Vieilles Vignes--Vintage 1997
Côte de Nuits. Domaine-bottled: Comtes Georges de Vogüé
In original wooden case
Vintage note: The third very good year in a row and judging by my rather arbitrary selection of notes, I found these wines appealing.
Apart from a cold and wet July, growing conditions were favourable. Vegetation was advanced by a warm and dry spring and the weather continued fine for the ever-crucial flowering. Late June saw the arrival of unseasonably cool, damp weather continuing into July. August, however, was hot, with no rainfall though there was some worrying humidity. Apart from a sprinkling of rain, which conveniently stopped before the harvest, September was also hot. It was a smaller crop than in 1996 but of very good quality. **** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
Tasting note: Vogüé's 1997 Musigny is medium to dark ruby-colored, and exhibits a breathtaking nose of blueberries, licorice, jammy blackberries, violets, Asian spices, and stones. This magnificent wine is medium to full-bodied, sublimely refined, and detailed. It is a great Musigny in a light and lace-like style. Red currants and cherries vie for the taster's attention with spices and fresh clay in its luxurious, yet well-defined, personality. To top things off, this awesome wine's immensely long finish reveals loads of supple tannins, which will ensure the necessary backbone for cellaring. Projected maturity: 2002-2012+. (93-95 points) Pierre Rovani, Wine Advocate #125, April 1999
