DOMAINE MORTET AND DOMAINE DENIS MORTET

Denis Mortet founded the eponymous Domaine in the early 1990s when the family holdings were split between him and his brother. Prior to this the wines had appeared as Mortet et Fils. He died at the age of 51, after taking his own life in January 2006. In his brief, but highly acclaimed passage from the winemaking scene, he rose to become a colossal figure in Burgundy, fashioning wines from relatively modest vineyard holdings which punch far above their weight. At Domaines Denis Mortet everything starts in the vineyard, where every measure is taken to produce the finest, ripest fruit possible, creating a style of wine which, as Denis used to say is "a pleasure to drink young or old". This is an estate of young vines -25-years-old- and where village wines are tended as if they were a Grand Cru; thus all the reds see 100 new oak. Denis Mortet's immaculate vineyards are the key and no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of excellence.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru--Vintage 1990
Côte de Nuits. Domaine-bottled: Mortet et Fils
Vintage note: A superb vintage. In common with the '89 vintage, there was a hot summer, but there were important differences. The winter was unusually warm, with temperatures up to 23 degrees in February and March encouraging vegetation. But April to June was much cooler with a good deal of rain. Flowering was later than usual and the potentially large crop was reduced by coulure and millerandage. The summer was hot and too dry, with near drought conditions. Nevertheless, ripening was advanced and the harvest began early, on 17th September in the Côte d'Or. Grapes were small and healthy with thick skins resulting in concentration of flesh and high sugar levels, good colour extraction and tannins. *****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
