LA CHAPELLE

Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1978
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Integrated Malmaison Wines import label. Bin-soiled label. Level 1 cm below the cork
Vintage note: Despite the terrible weather conditions, the was unquestionably a great Rhône vintage and said to be the best since 1911. It seemed to herald a welcome renaissance in the region. ***** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine

Tasting note: So massive that it was given an extra year in cask. First tasted in its third year: opaque, purple; peppery; packed with fruit. Tannic. Next a jump of eleven years: 'perfection now'. Three years later (1995) at the MW tasting of Penfolds Grange against La Chapelle: the latter was softer and somewhat overwhelmed by the Australian classic. Next, at the Jaboulet seminar in 1998: now medium-deep, still retaining a hint of youth; very fragrant bouquet; rich, perfect weight and state. A velvety magnum powerful (alcohol 15 in Paris. Most recently, with boned saddle of lamb: still ruby-shaded; lovely bouquet; sweetish, soft, perfect balance. Last noted at a Saintsbury Club dinner, March 2001 *****
