Bollinger, Grande Année--Vintage 1990
Bin-soiled and slightly damaged label
Tasting note: Christian Bizot said this was a good year, not exceptional but, judging by over half a dozen notes over the past two years, I think he was being unduly modest. I, and the audience at the Wine Experience in New York, were able to taste the first release in November 1998. Pinot Noir 65 fermentation in (old) oak and maturation in (old) barriques, seven years on lees. Palish yellow, very frothy; very fragrant; good flavour and length but austere, needing bottle ageing. I gave it my highest mark of the 25 top champagnes at the Smag & Behag blind tasting in Copenhagen; and treated the family to it that Christmas. Two notes the following year, the most recent a magnum at a dinner at Rosebank with the Brounsteins (from Diamond Creek in Napa) and other friends: fine bubbles; full, nutty bouquet; mouthfillingly rich, wonderful flavour, length and acidity. Last tasted Nov 2000 ***** A well-nigh perfect wine with another ten years to go. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
