A group of papier-mâché lacquer including a piqué snuff-box and a kovsh
by the Lukutin Factory, Moscow, second half of the 19th century; and Fedoskino Artel of the former Lukutin Factory, circa 1915
A rectangular, cigarette-case of convex form, the hinged cover with rectangular reserve painted with a peasant girl leaning on a fence, the border, sides and base of piqué scrolling trellis pattern, within dotted bands; and a cigar-case of oval section, painted with a fortune- teller, with hinged cover, each marked inside cover; a rectangular cigarette-box depicting the fable of the Giant Turnip, as a gilt ground silhouette, marked under base; a case of oblong section, painted with a peasant couple with agricultural tools; a smaller rectangular snuff-box with a girl spinning wool; and a kovsh painted with children among mushrooms, with a Russian riddle below, all apparently unmarked
5½ in. (14 cm.) to 2¾ in. (7 cm.) long
The inscription translates as :
RIDDLE:/Tiny and brave/he pulled himself through the earth/and found himself a little hat. (6)
