THE MOTHER OF GOD OF KAZAN SURROUNDED BY THE NARRATIVE OF ITS MIRACULOUS DISCOVERY

The story beginning at the upper left corner when the Mother of God appeared in a prophetic dream to a 10-year-old girl named Matrona asking for her to find her precious image; subsequently, Matrona conveying the message to her mother, and then having the same vision for a second time; on the upper right corner the girl informing the archbishop; further down, Matrona and her Mother digging and finding the icon; followed by the translation of the icon to the Church of St. Nicholas and then to the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Kazan, where it performed numerous miracles, the one visualised in the lower right compartment being the healing of a blind man; the painting executed in the traditional style, with mainly reds, greens and blue, amply highlighted in gold, the halo of the central image in cloisonné enamel, the oklad decorated with stylised interlaced patterns and rosettes, the inscription plates on the border referring to the subjects of the corresponding representations
