The image executed traditionally, with subdued earthy colours; the oklad and cut-out haloes made of filigree in an elaborate scroll and dot pattern, the maphorion of Mother of God and Christ's halo outlined with light purple cut-glass cabochons, two stars embellishing her robe and headdress

Lot Essay

An oklad made entirely of filigree, similar to the one on this lot, appears on an icon of a Bishop which belongs to the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
