The elderly saint portrayed realistically, raising a martyr's cross and bringing his left hand to his chest, with an elaborate silver gilt oklad, the background engraved with foliage patterns, his crown, halo, and double border of the oklad with colourful cloisonné enamel, the spandrels applied with gilt busts of cherubs, the prominent cross of the saint in translucent red
12 3/8 x 10 11/16 in. (31.3 x 27.1 cm)
Provenance
Purchased by a celebrated Austrian architect in 1970 from the gallery Connat Handels of Mrs. Eva Demner, Vienna, Austria. Thence inherited by the owner's sons
