PALESTINIAN, (JERUSALEM), 1881
A monumental canvas divided into several sections; the three principal compartments in the middle register framed by bands with vine-patterns intermingled with portraits of Prophets and Saints displaying scrolls; the central section depicting a detailed representation of the interior of the Rotunda of the Anastasis in Jerusalem together with the respective events that took place there, namely scenes from Christ's Passion, more prominent being the Crucifixion on Golgotha and Resurrection above the monument of the Holy Sepulchre, the Church surrounded by the walls of Jerusalem; the flanking lozenges portraying the Hodegetria and Christ Pantokrator; the small scenes of the upper frieze depicting episodes from the Creation of the World, the Last Judgement and Old Testament figures, the rest of the compositions deriving from the life of Christ and his Mother, images of the Evangelists in medallions occupy the four corners, along the border verses from the Scripture reciting Christ's sacrifice and victorious Resurrection, painted with contrasting deep and bright colours, the inscriptions naming the images in white, signed A.E. and dated 1881 at the bottom of the Lamentation on the lower register
