Lot Essay

Rudolf Kijzer was a hard-working businessman in Amsterdam who tried to visit as many art exhibitions as he could in his few moments of spare time. He is described as one of the first collectors who appreciated the art of his contemporaries of The Hague School. He became a close friend of Josef Israels and owned many oils and watercolours by other masters of The Hague School like Jacob Maris, Anton Mauve, Johannes Bosboom and of Laren School painters like Jacob Simon Hendrik Kever and Albert Neuhuys a.o. (For more information on Kijzer, see Ph. Zilcken in Vereeniging tot bevordering van Beeldende Kunsten, Premie uitgave, 1898)
