Lot Essay

Compare with the pastel of almost the identical composition, now in the Gemeentearchief, Amsterdam, which was sold in these Rooms on 24 April 1991, lot 363, with ill. One other similar composition (pastel, 29.5 x 39 cm) is recorded in the R.K.D., The Hague.

The present lot shows the Prins Hendrikkade with the pedestrian bridge towards the Central Station (constructed in 1889) in the background. In the left background the building site between the Damrak and the Martelaarsgracht is visible, with the first houses constructed on that site visible behind the woman on the right. Further on the right in the background lies the small park on the Prins Hendrikkade which was laid out in 1883 (See Ons Amsterdam, June 1992).
