8o (195 x 115 mm). 3 folding maps and 19 engraved plates (7 folding) (one map with a few small repairs on verso). (C5-C8 with repaired tears along top margins not affecting text.) Contemporary speckled panelled calf (rebacked preserving original spine, corners bumped). Provenance: allegorical bookplate on rear pastedown.
Second edition, preferred over the first edition because it includes the chart of the western and southern oceans. In 1699, Narbrough sailed onboard the Batchelour as part of a commission to find a western opening for the Northwest Passage and to explore the west coast of the Americas. His account is "... Of particular interest because of its description of Narbrough's passage in the Batchelour through the Strait of Magellan and into the South Pacific to Chile, which was much read by later navigators..." (Hill). Also included is Abel Janzoon Tansman's account of his famous voyage of 1642, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and visited Tonga and Fiji. Hill 1476; NMM 810; Sabin 72186; Wing N-154.
