Second edition. Woodes Rogers was commander-in-chief of two men-of-war fitted out by Bristol merchants to cruise against the Spaniards in the South Sea. He reached Juan Fernandez in 1709, and found Alexander Selkirk; then proceeded to the coast of Peru, sacked Guayaquil, and after several engagements returned to England in 1711. DNB describes his journal, first published in 1712, as "a work of great interest and of a quaint humour that renders it delightful reading." Howes R-421.
