2o (265 x 187 mm). Double-column. Engraved title-page printed in red and black, one plate and three initials. (Title-page skillfully repaired in the gutter, the top edges of many early pages repaired affecting the running titles of the "Prologo" and "Tabla," some others close-cropped, several marginal repairs occasionally crossing the text, [P6] supplied in facsimile.) Crushed red morocco gilt by Bedford. Provenance: Hispanic Society of America (bookplates).
An exceptionally early rendition of the romance of El Cid, preceded only in print by a version published in Seville in 1498 (Palau 54484). This Burgos edition is printed from an early anonymous manuscript preserved in the then Benedictine (now Cistercian) Monastery of San Pedro de Cardena, (where Roderigo Diaz de Bivár (ca 1040 - 1099) or "El Cid" is buried), with additions and alterations by Fr. Juan López de Velorado. The text draws heavily on the stories of "El Cid" preserved in the Cronica de Castilla commissioned by Alphonso XI nearly 200 years earlier, in turn based on an early Arabic text. The Hispanic Scoiety of America published a facsimile of this edition, printed by the de Vinne Press in 1903. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no other copy has appeared at auction in the last 25 years. Catholic Encyclopedia; Bibliotheca Grenvilliana page 141; Palau 54485.
