A PAIR OF IVORY AND HARDSTONE INSET HARDWOOD DISPLAY CABINETS
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Each with two sliding drawers and one hinged door, the square and rectangular shelves set at varying levels and bordered with reticulated scrollwork aprons, the door panels decorated with scenes of boys at play before garden pavilions set amongst rockwork in river landscapes, the side panels variously with fruiting peach and pomegranate trees, the drawers with flowerhead handles within fretwork designs, the bases inset to the fronts and sides with butterfly and floral reverse glass panels, supported on scrolling ruyi-form feet

A pair of related zitan cabinets and similarly embellished with ivory panels doors can be found in situ within the inner quarters of the Yangxindian, 'The Hall of Mental Cultivation', illustrated in Life in the Forbidden City of Qing Dynasty, Forbidden City Publishing House, 2007, p. 118, no. 184 (see fig. 1).
