A VERY RARE EARLY MING CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON 'DRAGON' CHARGER
MING DYNASTY, 14TH/15TH CENTURY

Finely carved on the interior to depict a fierce descending five-clawed dragon, detailed with two horns, an upturned long snout below bulging eyes, striding amidst clusters of ruyi clouds within a double-line border, the cavetto with Indian lotus blooms borne on a single undulating vine, supported on a short circular foot ring, covered entirely with a characteristic sea-green glaze with exception of the underside base with a biscuit ring, burnt orange in the firing

An identical Longquan celadon dragon charger of this large size is in the Percival David Foundation, illustrated by G. Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1958, p. 197, no. 110. Slightly smaller dishes, measuring 34 cm. diam., of this same pattern are known: the first was sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 1999, lot 277 and the other sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2005, lot 1447.
