Elles pouvaient être utilisées en tant que nef dans la tradition héritée de la Cour de France où elles jouaient alors un rôle uniquement décoratif marquant la place du plus important convive. Mais elles pouvaient également servir de "coupes de bienvenue" auquel cas elles servaient de coupes à boire et pouvaient être munies de quatre roues afin de passer d'un convive à l'autre. Ces modèles riches en détails avec mât, nid de pie, drapeau, voile, cordage en fils d'argent et équipage étaient une spécialité du maître Esaias zur Linden à Nuremberg et Heinrich Winterstein à Augsbourg. The "Schiffspokale" or boat-shaped cup had two possible functions. It could be displayed as an ornamental nef following the French court tradition where the object would be placed in front of the most important guest. Alternatively, it could be used as a drinking cup fitted with four wheels to allow the boat to be passed around the table. These highly decorative objects, including particular details such as the crow's nest, the ropes and crew, were a particular speciality of Esaias zur Linden in Nuremberg and Heinrich Winterstein in Augsburg.

The oval base chased with scrolling motifs, the stem applied with foliate brackets, the hull repoussé and chased with dolphins, with four figures on the bridge, two climbing the ropes and one in the crow's nest beneath a pennant, marked on foot and hull and assay scrape on base and hull
