MAKER'S MARK OF LEONHARD VORCHHAMER, NUREMBERG, CIRCA 1630
In the Gothic style, the hexafoil foot and body repoussé and chased with swirling lobes, the stem with beaded scroll brackets terminating in female heads, the body and cover applied with rope-work border, the silver finial formed as a vase of flowers, marked on base, border and cover and with assay scrape

The present lot is a good example of the Gothic revival in silver, popular in Nuremberg in the early 17th century, initiated by one of the most talented goldsmiths, Hans Petzolt, who revived and modernised the Gothic style abandoned some hundred years before. Cette coupe est un exemple du goût gothique revenu à la mode à Nuremberg au début du XVIIème siècle, initié par l'orfèvre le plus talentueux et le plus fécond de l'époque, Hans Petzolt qui sut renouveler ce style en engageant une véritable renaissance du gothique, délaissé quelques cent ans auparavant. Pour un exemple dans le même goût par le même maître-orfèvre, voir collection Fritz et Eugen Gutmann, Christie's Londres, 11 juin 2003, lot 162.
