AN AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN SILVER-GILT CUP FORMED AS A LION
PRESSBURG, 1807, MAKER'S MARK AR
On oval base chased with a border of swirling foliage and spray of flowers on matted ground, the lion raised on his hind legs holding an orb (shield missing) and with detachable head, marked on base and collar
The lion epitomises power, justice and wisdom and as such dominates the animal kingdom. Since the 16th century it has been one of the most favoured forms to be selected for welcome cups. The lion would generally be represented raised on his hind legs holding a large shield (lacking in the present example) which would be engraved with the arms of a town, family or guild.
