Le piédouche à décor mouluré de cartouches sur fond amati, l'ombilic décoré de masques féminins alternés de monstres marins dans des médaillons, le fût en Hercule drapé de la peau du lion de Némée supportant la coupe ovoïde repoussée de trois scènes illustrant les vertus romaines: Marcus Curtius à Porsenna, le combat entre les Horaces et les Curiates et le sacrifice du consul Mucius Scaevola, alternées par des masques et des guirlandes de fruits en rappel sur le couvercle, la prise en soldat, poinçons sur le bord

POSSIBLY LANDSHUT, LATE 16TH CENTURY, MAKER'S MARK GP CONJOINED PROBABLY FOR JOERG (GEORG) PLAICHHIERN
On circular domed base with waisted centre chased with a band of fruit and strapwork, the stem formed as Hercules wearing the Nemean lion's skin, the cup chased with three scenes emblematic of the Roman virtues, the domed cover with warrior finial, marked on bowl

Joerg (Georg) Plaichhiern is recorded as receiving two apprentices in his workshop in 1580 and 1582 (Max Frankenburger, "Die Landshuter Goldschmiede", in Oberbayerisches Archiv für vaterländische Geschichte, Munich, 1915, vol. 59, p. 134.)
