The fascination with nature and the exotic in 16th and 17th Century Europe is brilliantly displayed in the goldsmiths' mounting of materials as diverse as hardstones, rhinoceros horn, ivory, coconuts, ostrich eggs and nautilus and turbo shells. These objects, intended more for display than daily use, decorated the Schatzkammern or Kunstkammern of the rich and intellectually curious throughout Europe at this time such as the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden.

A GERMAN SILVER-GILT MOUNTED OSTRICH EGG CUP
MAKER'S MARK OF ELIAS ADAM, AUGSBURG, 1717-1721
On circular base chased with strapwork on matted ground, the stem formed as a mermaid supporting the egg above, the three straps engraved with Régence style motifs, the cover similarly chased, and with infant Bacchus finial, marked on reverse, border and cover

Two other similar cups mounted by Elias Adam, master from 1703-1745, in the 17th century style are recorded. One, dated 1725, has a mermaid stem supporting a carved egg with the bird's neck and head forming the cover of the cup (sold, Sotheby's, Mentmore sale, 19th May 1977, lot 663). The second one also has a carved egg but the stem is formed as Bacchus and the finial as a swirling branch (on loan to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford from a private collection).

Deux autres coupes montées dans le style du XVIIème siècle par Elias Adam, maître de 1703 à 1745, sont connues: la première datée 1725, le fût en sirène soutenant un oeuf gravé, le couvercle formé par le cou et la tête de l'autruche vendue par Sotheby's, Vente Mentmore, 19 Mai 1977 au lot 653. La deuxième dont le fût est formé par un Bacchus et la prise du couvercle en branchage torsadé se trouve actuellement en dépôt au Ashmolean Museum à Oxford.
