Lot Essay

The city of Volterra specialized in the production of stone urns in alabaster. The front of the urns often had mythological scenes in relief, while the lids, as here, show the deceased reclining. For a related example see pl. 17 in Cateni, Volterra, Il Museo Etrusco.
