A GREEK GOLD CLASP
CLASSICAL PERIOD, CIRCA 5TH CENTURY B.C.
Composed of two lion-head terminals, the well-modelled heads with fine details for the mane and the furrowed brow, the convex eyes with indented pupils, stippling for the chin, with conical collars, beaded and rope wires at the join, filigree spirals enhanced by granulation along their lengths, one lion with a loop in its mouth, the other with an elaborate Herakles knot protruding from its open mouth, formed of twisted wire, a large granule in each corner, a sheet gold plaque on its upper surface, embossed with a seated horned, winged lion-griffin, with a hook closure on the underside; joined to a modern ancient-style gold chain
