The revolutionary GMT-Master II, reference 16760 was introduced into the market in 1983. The model featured the new calibre 3085 movement which allowed the independent adjustment of the hour hand from the GMT hand, enabling the instantaneous setting of the second time. Henceforth, the rotating bezel could be used to calculate a third time zone if required.

The 16760 is the first GMT to be produced exclusively with a sapphire crystal. The model also featured an extra-thick case, some 1 mm. thicker than its successors, as well as a thicker bezel and crown guards. This has led to collectors' nickname of "Fat Lady".

Produced until 1988, the short-run 16760 was replaced by the much longer running reference 16710 (see lot 3243).
