The perpetual calendar has traditionally been an enrichment of the most complicated watches, often in conjunction with chimes, repeaters or chronographs. As an isolated function, A. Lange & Söhne integrated the perpetual calendar mechanism with moon-phase display in only five pocket watches between 1887 and 1931.
In 2001, the Saxon manufactory introduced the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL, the first self-winding automatic wristwatch in the history of mechanical timekeeping that features a perpetual calendar, outsize date, and the patented "zero-reset" mechanism.
The movement of the Langematik Perpetual, calibre L922.1, totals 478 parts, each meticulously finished, assembled and adjusted by hand. The Sax-0-Mat's embossed 21k gold and platinum winding rotor is placed such as to permit viewing of the escapement, with its hand-cut balance cock and Lange's whiplash precision micrometer regulation.
The first and last syllables in the word "Sax-0-Mat" stand for the manufactory's Saxon location and its automatic winding respectively. A. Lange & Süohne's unique zero-reset function gives the "0" its raison d'être.
