In Greek mythology, Europa was the daughter of King Agenor of Sidon. She was named after the continent of Europe. One night Europa had a dream in which two continents depicted as women were arguing, Asia maintained that Europa had in fact been born in Asia and that she belonged to it.
On waking up Europa slightly disturbed by the dream, summoned her companions, and went off to enjoy the most beautiful of days, gathering flowers. Zeus noticed this group and perhaps spurred on by Eros and his arrows presented himself to the group of maidens appearing as a white bull of the utmost beauty. This bull was so attractive that the maidens all rushed to stroke and handle it.
The bull in response laid down and Europa rode on its back, as the bull made headway towards the sea. When they swam in the sea Europa also noticed a there was a small gathering with Nereids riding dolphins, Triton blowing his horn and even Poseidon. She soon realized that the Bull Zeus must be a God. Zeus explained his love to her and took her to Crete, where he had originally been raised, and promised that she bear him many famous sons. Her sons included Minos 1 and Rhadamanthus.
