SEA BATTLE PORTO BELLO
By the year 1708, the war of the Spanish Succession had the English and Dutch attacking Spanish galleons wherever they could be found. The treasure galleons were the prime target. The success of the English and Dutch combined fleets in capturing the treasure galleons in Vigo Bay had whetted their appetite for Spanish gold, and a fleet of English warships were assigned to permanently patrol the waters off Cartegena, Columbia.
On 7th June, 1708, a battle broke between the English ships and the Spanish galleons near the harbour of Porto Bello. Four English ships, commanded by Commodore Charles Wager aboard the flagship "HMS Expedition", attacked Spaniard General Do Joseph de Santillon's "San José". Both sides exchanged some 250 cannon shots, of which 64 ornamented the ballast mound of the "San José", which inevitably lead to her sinking with all the riches.
A miniature reproduction of the Porto Bello sea battle decorates the enamel cloisonné dial of the "San Marco Chronometer". Each dial requires over half a meter of fine gold wire (0.07 mm thickness), 26 baking processes and over 50 working hours to produce.
