Reference 3970 was launched in 1986 as the descendant of the highly coveted and exquisite reference 2499. Available in all precious metals and a variety of different dial configurations, the model is generally divided into four series:

- First series: snap-on full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands

- Second series: screw-down full back, gold applied baton hour markers, feuille hands

- Third series, like the present watch: screw-down full back and sapphire crystal display back, gold applied lapidated hour markers, baton hands

- Fourth and final series: same as the third but with new serial numbers and delivered with deployant clasps

Production ended in 2004 and was replaced by reference 5970.
