The painting was sold in Paris in 1966 as the Portrait of the Duchesse de Phalaris, one of the several mistresses of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Regent from 1715 to 1723. In this portrait Largillière displays his skills as a painter of portraits and sumptuous drapery, as well as flowers.
