Lot Essay

This dramatic image of the prophet Moses is closely based on a prototype by Philippe de Champaigne in the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, given to the Imperial Collection in 1808 by César-Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin in 1808. An attribution to Anton Pavlovich Losenko (Glukhov 1737-1773 Saint Petersburg), a Russian artist who studied at the Académie in Paris under Jean Reteux and Joseph-Marie Vien, has been suggested.
