Lot Essay

An identical miniature by Cross, of the same size, is in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (H. Hickl-Szabo, Portrait Miniatures in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, 1981, p. 8, pl. 4).
The Toronto version is identifed as James Crofts, Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685), a natural son of King Charles II and Lucy Walter who died on the scaffold for rebellion against King James II.
