Featuring graceful classical maidens holding aloft an 'antique' tazza, these ormolu-enriched lapis lazuli and patinated bronze models exemplify the European taste for classical imagery in decorative arts of the early 19th century.
Celebrated artists such as maître fondeur-ciseleur Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) and bronzier Pierre-François Feuchère (1737-1832) are also recorded to have frequently executed compositions based on similar models (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, pp.382-385, figs. 5.16.4 - 5.16.5). A closely-related tazza, part of a super-structure of a centre table, is in the Museo Capodimonte, Naples (ill. bid., p.405, fig. 5.19.9) while a further related example featuring classically-draped maidens holding aloft an ormolu-enriched malachite circular tazza was sold at Christie's, New York, 17-18 May 2005, lot 476 ($31,200 with premium).
