Inlaid overall with pastoral scenes, the shaped rectangular hinged top with lobed edges, depicting courtly-dressed figures playing billiards within a scroll-decorated cartouche, the reserves similarly decorated with flowers and animals, enclosing an interior with a removable tray, the front, back and sides similarly decorated, on scroll feet

This jewel-like mother-of-pearl and silver-inlaid tortoiseshell piqué casket can be related to the gold-inlaid tortoiseshell jewel casket from the collection of Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild, sold at Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 122.
Among comparable German piqué objets de vertu sold at auction, a related gold-inlaid tortoiseshell piqué casket was sold at Christie's, London, 6 July 2006, lot 51, while another was sold, Christie's, Amsterdam, 27-28 June 2007, lot 230.
