These impressive neoclassical fauteuils are not only intriguing by their bold stylistic decoration but also by the unusually rich character of the carved ornamentation. They are related to an armchair in the Palace of Queluz in Lisbon which has been attributed to one of the foremost Portuguese craftsmen, Silvestre de Faria Lôbo (A.C. Pinto, Cadeiras Portuguesas, Lisbon, 1952, fig.232, pl. CXI) and another closely related and similarly richly carved pair of fauteuils was sold at Sothebys, London, 10 June 1994, lot 97.
