On Christmas Day 1888 Goodwin wrote that 'Beauty - the beauty that is in the landscape - is a sealed book to many, hence in a degree the landscape painter may magnify his calling, for is he not one who is helping to open the eyes of the blind that they may see the hand of our Heavenly Father in the things that he has made for our delight?'

Goodwin painted many of the most celebrated cathedrals in England, including those at Canterbury, Ely, Exeter and Lincoln. Perhaps he felt that in recording these religious monuments on paper, he was encouraging the spiritual awareness of the public and that by 'looking on these things they may, through them, see and desire to see still more of the "King in His beauty"'. Another watercolour of Wells Cathedral by Goodwin was sold in these Rooms, 20 November 2000, that was excecuted during the summer of 1922 and depicts the same side of the building but from a slightly different angle.
