Lot Essay

Narrative painting was still hugely popular when Spencelayh began his career, and it clearly had a powerful influence on his own approach to painting. As stated by The Times on 6 April 1957, his elaborately detailed compositions were enjoyed both for 'the skill with which he coordinates the detail' and 'the character and salty humour'.
