Romanée-Conti--Vintage 1972
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Level: 4cm; lightly bin soiled label, bottle numbered 3609, house of Sobel slip
"Bricking but still healthy ruby core. This has never been particularly impressive as the aromas were surprisingly post mature early and even by the mid-nineties, several bottles were badly tiring. The bottle in the tasting (which is the best I have ever experienced) displayed lovely aromatic complexity with plenty of spice but the aromas ran to more of an earthy/sauvage character with ample sous bois rather than the classic RC profile and were followed by medium weight velvety flavors that displayed more acid on the finish than the mid-palate could comfortably buffer. To be sure, this is still an interesting RC but by no means a great one and while good bottles will still be alive and well, there is no reason to delay opening them now." BH, Mar 4, 2008
