Côte de Nuits, de Vogüé Level: 6.5cm; chateau bottled, Domaine capsule, cut capsule, Cuvee de Reserve branded cork, Domaine, vineyard and vintage branded cork, nicked label
"I had the truly extraordinary good fortune to taste this twice in one week and while neither bottle was at the level that the very best examples I have ever tried, both were certainly fine. The bottle in the tasting had ullage of < 4 1/2 cm and was bricked through to the center. A refined, elegant and lovely old burg nose reflecting spice, earth, leather, ample sous bois and an interesting mushroom character that stood quite apart from the sous bois led to rich, mouth coating and sweet flavors that still retain some vibrancy and the classic '45 finishing structure. Unfortunately, after about 20 minutes, the balance began to slide downhill and the wine essentially faded away. While it is undeniably true that this is no longer what it once was, even in magnum format, it's easy to see how great this once was and to be sure, it's still a lovely drink, just be sure to immediately serve after opening."
