A herdsman with cattle on a riverbank at dawn

The figure in the foreground is to be compared with the figure in a picture by Cuyp painted circa 1641, of which the present whereabouts are unknown. The same foreground figure also appears in a picture by Cuyp of the early 1650s, showing a shepherd and his flock, in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt. (S.
