The Order was founded by George III in 1783, the year of Thomas Brady's death. Membership was limited to the Monarchy, the Viceroy of Ireland and to twenty-two Knights.

A GEORGIAN IRISH ROBE SWORD OF THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS ORDER OF ST. PATRICK, BY BRADY, DUBLIN

With single-edged fullered blade (patches of rust staining and light pitting), copper hilt including bow-tie quillons engraved with the badge of the Order together with the royal cypher, the reverse decorated with shamrock sprays, the grip en suite, and in its original scabbard with engraved middle-band and locket, the latter signed by the cutler (the hilt and scabbard mounts previously gilt, the scabbard worn and incomplete)
