Classified as Oakshott type XVII and pommel type H.I.
Early examples of this type are preserved in the Kantonales Antiquarium, Aarau, Switzerland. These were recovered from the graves of the Austrian knights Friedrich von Tarant and Friedrich von Griffenstein, each of whom died at the battle of Sempach in 1386.
Two later examples were formerly in the E.A. Christensens collection, Copenhagen, one of which bears an Arabic inscription recording its deposition in the arsenal at Alexandria in 1427 (see Ada Bruhn Hoffmeyer, Gammelt Jern E. A. Christensens Vabensamling, Copenhagen 1968, Nos. 51 and 57).
