A GERMAN ETCHED COMB MORION
LATE 16TH CENTURY
With one-piece skull rising to a cabled comb, the base encircled with lining rivets on pewter rosette washers, the brim struck with a mark (obscured by the etching), and the edges turned and roped, etched throughout with bands of scrolling flowering foliage on a blackened granular ground, involving a pair of half-putti in triumph on both sides of the comb, armoured tilting figures on caparisoned mounts differing over the respective sides of the skull, each within a cartouche, also differing, and each against a differing background pattern, involving a pair of winged sphinx figures on one side and a series of monsters' heads on the other (the brim cracked on one side, the etching partly rubbed around the brim, the comb with internal patch)
