Lot Essay

This is a preliminary study for a woodcut for possible inclusion in the Omega Workshops' publication Original Woodcuts by Various Artists, 1918. The design was never, as far as is known, transferred to a woodblock, and, instead, the Omega book contained Bell's Dahlias and Nude. She enjoyed the woodcut process and made several for her sister Virginia Woolf's publications at the Hogarth Press - for Kew Gardens (1919) and Monday or Tuesday (1921).
